Each afternoon, the Earth's atmosphere provides the setting sun with an orange color and a squashed, distorted shape.  This photo, taken from the shoreline at Imperial Beach, California, shows our star less than half a degree from the ocean horizon, and silhouetted behind wispy high clouds.  Those in the boat below surely had an equally impressive view.
